How to control automatic media download on WhatsApp

WhatsApp is a widely used social media messenger. It is used by billions of people around the world. Whatsapp Messenger can be downloaded from the App Store on your iPhone to exchange messages, media, documents.

You can choose to control the images and videos to download to your iPhone. This will prevent media received on WhatsApp from taking up space in your iPhone albums. By default, WhatsApp will automatically download the images through your cellular connection to provide you with quick access to your latest photos. Audio and video will automatically download only over Wi-Fi.

You can manage your preferences by following the steps mentioned below.

How to set up automatic download on iPhone

Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your iPhone.

Step 2: Then go to “Settings”.

Step 3: Now open “storage and data”.

Now you can choose when WhatsApp will automatically download photos, audio, videos, and documents.

Tap each type of media and never choose Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi and cellular.

  • Never: Media will never be downloaded automatically. You will have to manually tap on each file to download it.

Note: If you set your automatic download settings to “never”, your videos will not be downloaded automatically. However, when you press the play button, the video will start playing immediately and continue the downloading process in the background.

  • Wi-Fi: Media content will be automatically downloaded when you are connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot such as your home internet connection.
  • Wi-Fi and Cellular: Media will be automatically downloaded whenever you have an Internet connection.

Note: If you have a limited data plan, it is suggested to restrict automatic media download when connected to Wi-Fi only.

How to set up automatic download on Android

By default, WhatsApp will automatically download the images through your cellular connection to provide you with quick access to your latest photos.

How to set up automatic upload of photos, videos or audio

Step 1: Go to WhatsApp.

Step 2: Then tap on “more options”.

Step 3: Now open “Settings”.

Step 4: Then go to “Storage and Data”.

Step 5: Now tap on “Auto Media Download”.

Here you can choose when WhatsApp will automatically download media.

  • When using mobile data: The selected media will be automatically downloaded when you are connected to cellular data.
  • When connected to Wi-Fi: The selected media is automatically downloaded when you are connected to Wi-Fi.
  • When roaming: The selected media will be automatically downloaded when you are roaming.

To note:

  • If you turn on auto-download while roaming, it can significantly increase your mobile operator’s charges, as data roaming is often expensive.
  • You can find automatically downloaded media in your phone’s gallery.
